London Olympics 2012

 The following features going back to 2007 look at different perspectives on the 2012 London Olympics.  Ranging from what happened to the feral cats that used to live on what is now the Olympic Park to Policing and deployment of missiles during the games themselves.

Disabled people decided to hold their own Paralympic style opening ceremony.  They were very critical of the private company ATOS, who have been carrying out work capability assessments on behalf of the Govt, and are also major sponsors of the Paralympic Games.  The disabled campaigners claim that ATOS are instrumental in carrying out Govt policy to reduce welfare benefits to sick and disabled people.  NuSound Radio went down to the theatrical, tongue in cheek opening ceremony event,  organised by Disabled People Against Cuts (DPAC) – Broadcast 30/08/12

The term “Austerity Olympics” is usually used to refer to the London 1948 Games, just after the Second World war when there was rationing and shortages.   But the 2012 Games were held during times of cutbacks in public services and growing unemployment that in particular hit young people.  In response to this some young people organised their own 2012 Austerity Games in East London – Broadcast 19/07/12

The decision by the Olympic authorities to re-route the Olympic marathon out of East London, to a circuit in the City / West End was seen as a snub by many local people – Broadcast 07/10/10

Many local people felt left out of the planning stages of the Olympics and came up with their own plans.  In this case it was knitting ! – Broadcast 30/10/10
